The Bioaim Rat Activin A ELISA kit is a solid phase sandwich ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) for the quantitative measurement of Activin A in Rat serum, plasma and cell culture media. An antibody specific for Rat Activin A was coated on a 96-well plate. Standards and samples are added to the wells and any Activin A present binds to the immobilized antibody. The wells are washed and biotinylated anti-Rat Activin A antibody is added. After washing away unbound biotinylated antibody, HRP-conjugated streptavidin is added to the wells. The wells are again washed and TMB substrate solution is added, which produces a blue color in direct proportion to the amount of Activin A present in the initial sample. The Stop Solution changes the color from blue to yellow, and the microwell absorbances are read at 450 nm.

Background: Activin and inhibin are two closely related protein complexes that have almost directly opposite biological effects. activin enhances FSH biosynthesis and secretion, and participates in the regulation of the menstrual cycle. Many other functions have been found to be exerted by activin, including roles in cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, metabolism, homeostasis, immune response, wound repair, and endocrine function. Conversely, inhibin downregulates FSH synthesis and inhibits FSH secretion.
