The Bioaim Human Lipocalin-2 ELISA kit is a solid phase sandwich ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) for the quantitative measurement of Lipocalin-2 in human serum and plasma. An antibody specific for human Lipocalin-2 was coated on a 96-well plate. Standards and samples are added to the wells and any Lipocalin-2 present binds to the immobilized antibody. The wells are washed and biotinylated anti-human Lipocalin-2 antibody is added. After washing away unbound biotinylated antibody, HRP-conjugated streptavidin is added to the wells. The wells are again washed and TMB substrate solution is added, which produces a blue color in direct proportion to the amount of Lipocalin-2 present in the initial sample. Lipocalin-2 ( Lipocalin-2 ) Background: The Lipocalin family comprises a diverse group of mostly secreted soluble proteins that bind hydrophobic ligands and act as transporters, carrying small molecules to specific cells. Lipocalin-2, also known as neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), is a component of granules in neutrophils from tissues that are normally exposed to microorganisms and is upregulated during inflammation. Lipocalin-2 can form homodimers and can heterodimerize with the neutrophil gelatinase MMP-9. In the case of acute kidney injury (AKI), NGAL is secreted in high levels into the blood and urine within 2 hours of injury. Because NGAL is protease resistant and small, the protein is easily excreted and detected in the urine. NGAL levels in patients with AKI have been associated with the severity of their prognosis and can be used as a biomarker for AKI.
